Why I joined: I want to connect with like minded people and be part of a community that focus on the future of our kids and the generations to come. It is the small part we all play that will make a difference and I’m hoping that together we can achieve this.
What I hope to get from it: It is a learning curve for me as it is for so many businesses. Having already a business model focused on sustainability, I hope I can learn as much as I possible. I hope I can also teach other things I’ve already learned. I’m open to discussions, ideas and ways we can all become more sustainable.
What I do in business: I own an online groceries platform focused on low miles foods and local produce. Additionally, we opened our first shop in Aberdeen. We source everything as close as possible to home and work with businesses that bring added value to the community where they operate. This means they have a social responsibility aspect to their business and are focused on creating their product in a responsible way, with environmental challenges at the forefront. We are true believers that you should know exactly where all your food comes from so we’re working on offering true transparency on our products. We address people that haven’t made the transition to a greener life or don’t know where to start.
What are your hobbis and passions?: I like to cook which comes at no surprise having owned previously a bus café. I prepared my first dish at 10 and have been experimenting ever since.
Personal actions I have taken or plan in my NetZero journey: From small changes like eliminating plastic bags, shopping locally, cooking from scratch, walking to work when possible, cutting down on meat products to bigger actions like starting up a business with the goal of helping people transition easier to a greener life, at least from the grocery shopping perspective.
Company actions I have taken to accelerate NetZero: We source all of our products as close as possible to home to ensure they have as little miles as possible. We offer the information on our website about how many miles the product has travelled. We get loose fruits and veg and only work with non-plastic carrier bags. We reutilize quite a lot of the products to ensure our waste is to the minimum and working continuously on evaluating this process to find better ways to reduce this even further.
At the moment, we are working in collaboration with a local company to integrate a blockchain technology which will allow us to be even more clear in the transparency we offer about our products and also will enable us to calculate the carbon print of each product we stock.
What expertise, knowledge, services or products they can offer to other members to accelerate their NetZero path: For me is a work in progress and continuous learning but I am happy to share with anybody all the things we’ve learned so far and the challenges we had to face together along with the solutions we found.
Finally, Something people might not know about you that makes you memorable:
I don’t think I am a memorable person. I was born and raised in a coal mining community. I know how damaging exploitation is to the environment and to health. Everything I do and all the challenges I’m facing are because I want to create a better, cleaner future for my daughter. I always think how our world will be for her in 10-20 years time and try to play my part to hopefully allow her to develop in a greener community.
